We are especially blessed in Ogden, Utah, because there are more than 200 miles of trails surrounding us. Trails Foundation Norther Utah (formerly Weber pathways) offers a full list of local trails, featuring trail information and descriptions.

Whether you are an avid hiker or heading out on your first trail, preparation will make all the difference in your experience.

Here is your complete guide to preparing for a hike:

Never Hike Alone

Go with a partner or find a hiking group, but never hit the trails by yourself.

Plan Ahead

Pick a trail and make a plan. Let someone know where you will be and about how long you are planning for the hike to take. Know your destination and try to make a plan to know how long it should take you to get there. Check the weather. Be prepared for heat, low temperatures, or rain. If conditions are too extreme, change your plans.

Water and Food

Drink plenty of water. Bring enough water for the length of your hike. Know if or where water is available on your trail. Pack plenty of snacks for the length of your hike. Protein bars, nuts, jerky and fruit make for the best energy-promoting snacks.

Sun Protection

Where sun protection no matter the time of year. Where a hat, stay covered and seek shade often. Reapply SPF every 2 hours.

Dress Accordingly

After you check the weather for your location, dress appropriately. Even if it is summer, you may want to bring a light jacket if temperatures drop in the evenings. Have a poncho in your pack if rain is possible. Wear protective clothing and appropriate shoes. Pants and sturdy hiking shoes are important for comfort and safety.

Be Prepared

Pack a first aid kit and emergency supplies in your hiking bag. Pack according to the type of hike you are doing and for the level of difficulty.

Follow these tips and you’re sure to have a fun and safe time hiking.
